SILVIA K X MARA VERA
Silvia K Collaborates presents the first in a new series of one-off projects with individual designer-makers to produce limited edition statement pieces. In Mara Vera’s Textiles Silvia quickly recognised a combination of style and sustainability that matches her own.
All Mara Vera textiles are hand woven on pit-looms and hand block printed with natural and azo-free dyes. As natural dyes vary, only a single print run has been specifically colour-matched to Silvia’s glazes.
The lamp base is inspired by the columnar form of a traditional plunge butter churn, and is slab-built by hand in terracotta. The surface is then richly textured before the glaze is applied.
Inviting Mara Vera’s designer Drashta Sarvaiya to Brighton in summer 2018, they worked on a collaborative textile design that would echo the bold glazes of Silvia’s ceramics. The result is a contemporary representation of the human form using a single block form repeated in deep chestnut and dijon colourways over a sandstone linen base.
Keeping social and environmental responsibility at the heart of their business, Mara Vera collaborates with master artisans in Gujarat and Rajasthan, producing high quality handmade textiles with modern designs, while investing 5% of all sales back into local artisan communities.
This limited edition will produce just 15 lampshades, which Silvia constructs back in her Brighton studio. The round jute-covered cord is beautifully chunky to echo the strength of the overall form.
